Body Confidence - Group Talk - Week Commencing 20th May 2024.

our weight journeys can be challenging, both mentally and physically, and everyone's journey is personal to themselves as there are no two experiences exactly the same. Just as there are no two days exactly the same. some are more challenging than others, and our responses and attitudes vary with each and every experience, however its important whilst focusing on our weight journey and living a healthier lifestyle we develop a positive mindset, encouraging ourselves to feel confident about how we look and who we are, to support us to achieve our goals.

Boosting/building our body confidence can support and motivate us to achieve our goals. The majority of us think of our bodies in regards of how it looks, i.e.; its shape, size and especially any flaws. But we should re-address our focus and concentrate on what our bodies have and can do for us. Appreciating our bodies for its functions rather than its looks. By changing our focus this can encourage us to be more active creating a greater well-being and a positive body image.

Body positivity is an expression used to describe the belief that all bodies are worthy of love and acceptance no matter what size, shape or appearance, its important to be kind to ourselves and our bodies. Observing body positivity supports you to learn to appreciate your body for all the amazing things it can do.

The next time you have a negative thought about a feature of your body/appearance switch the focus on what that part of your body has done, or does for you now/daily.

  • Picture a part of your body you are unhappy with. For example you might feel your arms are too big, so visualise your arms in your mind.

  • Think carefully what that part of your body does for you. For example your arms allow you to carry your children/grandchildren.

  • Acknowledge the benefits that part of your body gives you. For example using your arms to hug your loved ones.

Delusional ideals of how we 'should' look can lead to us feeling unhappy about our appearance, however the more we focus on how our body works for us, the more your feelings will shift creating positivity about your body image boosting your body confidence.

Always be kind to yourself and speak to yourself as you would to your friend, love your body and feel confident, you only have one so embrace it and support it to be its best to support you through life.
