At times we simply lack the motivation to keep going on our weight loss journeys, however motivation is something we can develop and increase by applying different strategies.
Its important that we determine WHY we are on the journey to lose weight. Your reason will/must be personal to you, i.e. maybe prevent Diabetes, or other health risks, or keeping you healthy to run after your children/Grandchildren, or improving your self-confidence or how you feel in your clothes.
Write down your WHY so you can read it as a reminder when struggling, to support and encourage your motivation.
Its imperative to have realistic expectations, we didn't gain the weight over night, and unfortunately it takes longer to lose than gain. Set small goals along your journey i.e. just losing 5-10% of your weight can;
Improve blood sugar control
Reduce the risk of heart disease
Lowers cholesterol levels
Reduces joint pain
Reduces the risk of certain cancers
Every 1lb off in weight is 4lb of pressure off our knees. Setting small goals supports and develops our motivation as we achieve them, carrying us forward to our ultimate goal.
I always say 'Fake it, till you Make it' and by keeping a track of our food/drink intake, whether its tracking by Pen and Paper or by APP. Keeping a journal of all our intake, and our emotions can help identify healthier ways to eat, it can also allow you to identify emotional triggers and help you master new coping strategies rather than using food.
By tracking the Good, Bad and the Darn Right Ugly, helps educate us in the right direction, of healthier choices and in-turn creates healthier habits.
Remember when you achieve your progress goals celebrate, but remind yourself you are not a dog and don't need food rewards, spoil yourself with;
Getting a Manicure/Pedicure
Going to the Cinema/Theatre
Buying new clothes
Taking a class - Dance, Cooking, Art...
Remember to achieve our goals its Persistence over Perfection, the road is never smooth, we often hit bumps along the way and occasionally pot holes, but we can get out of them with self love and care, believe in yourself and all that you are, knowing that there is something inside of you that is greater than any obstacle.
