Persistence over Perfection - Group Talk - Week Commencing 8th July 2024.

We are here at Friends On A Journey as we are prioritising our health and well-being in particular our weight.

Losing weight sometimes feels like a constant battle, an uphill fight especially when we are emotional eaters. Some of us find losing weight easy and can maintain there goals, and others battle every day.

I often think of weight journeys as car journeys... we set off on our journeys, with excitement of our destination, but after being on the road a while we need a rest break, calling in at the services. We get back in the car after a quick stop and off we go again. Unfortunately down the road we hit a pot hole and blow a tyre, we have to sit on the hard shoulder to be recovered. Once recovered and new tyre fitted we are back on our journey, but as time goes by all those coffees we drank whilst awaiting recovery, we are in need of another rest break calling in at the services, this time we have something to eat taking a little longer to get back on the road. After time if we stay strong and focused we will reach our destination and enjoy ourselves.

This analogy is the same for our weight loss journeys, we chose our destination - Weight Goal/Non Scale Goal, and the route we intend to take - choosing a plan that works for you. Persistence allows when we have a stumble - Birthday/Bad Day at Work, to be off track, but to get back on with our journey at the next meal.

Where-as Perfection creates an all or nothing approach. Once we stumble we struggle to get back on track until the Monday, as its the start of a fresh week. If this repeats we feel failure and quit our journey not reaching our destination. Where-as persistence doesn't create any demanding expectations and allows you to be kind to yourself, in turn allowing you to reach your goals through the new healthy habits you have created.

Perfection:- Restrictive, then over indulgent

Persistence:- Life-long healthy heating

Weight loss does not need to be all or nothing, it needs flexibility, kindness and time.

  1. Set OPEN Goals to motivate your Scale Goals/ Non Scale Goals, just one or two at a time, small but effective that can be developed.

  2. Remember no food is off limits, you can eat all foods in moderation, which avoids deprivation.

  3. Track everything that passes your lips, EVERYTHING, the good, the bad and the ugly, it might not be as bad as you think. Know what you are eating and be accountable.

  4. Don't allow yourself to get stuck in a rut, try new foods, new recipes, mix it up.

  5. However small your success is celebrate and feel proud of your achievements, using non food rewards.

I recognise personally how hard weight loss is but know persistence is key, and repeating healthy habits day in, day out, keeps you chiselling away, whatever life throws at you in-between times, believe in yourself, strive for persistence not perfection.
